Abuja bombings Drama as accused pleads guilty, recants

•Don’t pick phones, laptops anywhere, police warn public

THE Federal Government yesterday arraigned five suspected bombers of Nyanya and Kuje, both satellite towns in Abuja, on October 2, 2015 on five counts of terrorism. They were brought before Justice Abdulkadir Abdulkafarati of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja. This is even as the police warned the public not to pick I-pad, lap- tops or phones on the street or elsewhere.

The accused persons are Abdulazeez Muhazab, Ishaka Salihu, Mohammed Jimoh, Abdulwaheed Nasiru and Abdullahi Nasiru.‎ The prosecution counsel, who is the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mr. Diri Mohammed, told the court to accept the charge sheet filed on October 21 as having been properly filed and served.

One of the five accused, Abdulwaheed Nasiru, yesterday pleaded guilty to one of the five counts.
Nasiru pleaded guilty to the possession of materials used for making Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and 12 already made ones when arrested on October 6 alongside other co-accused persons behind Military Cementary Airport Road in Abuja.

Nasiru, the fourth accused person, had along with the fifth, Abdullahi Nasiru, sought the charges to be interpreted to them in pidgin English.

He was repeatedly asked if he understood the charges and he maintained that he was guilty.
Even the intervention by his lawyer, Mr. Nurein Sulyman, who jumped up from his seat and approached the dock to ask him if he truly understood what he pleaded guilty to, would not make him change his plea.

While admitting his guilt, he said he was not the owner of the IED materials but his friend.
“No be me get am; na my friend get am,” he said in pidgin English.
The rest of the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the remaining charges.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Solomon Arase, yesterday alerted the public of a new ploy by Boko Haram terrorists, who he said now use I-pad, Lap- tops, and mobile telephone handsets to get victims.

A statement issued by Force spokesman, Bisi Komolafe, the IGP said insurgents use I-pad, Laptops, handsets and other electronic gadgets to manufacture IEDs, and place them at strategy locations to attract innocent Nigerians.

He said the items are usually placed in highly populated places like bus stops, markets, schools, churches, mosques, motorparks and other public places.
