Husband battles doctor over death of wife, baby

A father of two, Mr. John Ujatalor, has accused the Medical Director of Ogbeide Medical Centre Ubiaja, Edo State, Dr. John Ogbeide, of negligence in the death of his baby and  wife, Eunice.

Eunice was said to have died on April 5, 2014 while she was being delivered of the baby at the hospital. She was said to have been over 10 months pregnant at the time.
In a telephone interview with PUNCH Metro, Ujatatlor said the scan results showed Eunice was expected to give birth in March 2014.

Ujatalor said, “Eunice had her first two deliveries in that hospital. Naturally when she was pregnant for the third time, we went back there. Ogbeide told us that from the scan results, Eunice ought to have given birth in March. Ogbeide also said from his own calculation, she ought to have delivered in February. He assured us that there was no cause for alarm so, Eunice kept showing up for ante natal clinics as at when due.”

On April 4, 2014, Eunice was said to have begun her labour at about 10pm. Ujatalor said his wife was left in the care of the nurses on duty.
He said, “I was told to go back home. I waited till 5.30am, expecting to receive a call that Eunice had been delivered of our baby. When I got no such call, I went to the hospital; this was around 6am. I waited till 8am for the good news.

“Around 9am, Ogbeide called me aside. He told me that he would have to deliver Eunice by Caesarian section because the baby was coming out with the hand first instead of the head. Although I was worried, I gave my consent.”
At about 1pm, Ogbeide informed Ujatalor that his wife and baby did not survive the surgical procedure. He allegedly told the bereaved husband that Eunice’s uterus had ruptured and had died of internal bleeding.

Ujatalor said, “Ogbeide should have known something was wrong immediately the labour became prolonged. Instead, he allowed Eunice to labour for a long time. By the time she was being operated, she was already weak.

“As if that was not enough, the policemen he brought to the hospital also shot Eunice’s brother Damien in the eye. He had gone to the hospital to demand that he see his sister’s corpse.”
PUNCH Metro gathered that after Ogbeide was told of his wife’s death, he was taken away from the hospital to his home. However, when Damien was informed of the incident, he went to the hospital to demand answers.

Damien was allegedly denied entrance into the hospital’s mortuary. He reportedly went back a few hours later. At the time, two armed policemen from the Ubiaja Police Station were at the hospital. Damien was reportedly shot in the eye by the policemen.
His sister, Kate Esene, said, “We went to the police station to report the shooting. Unknown to us, the same policeman who shot Damien, was sitting at the counter. It was when he refused to take our statement that we realised he was the same person.

“We later took Damien to the Irrua Specialist Hospital. He was transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Although the divisional police officer of Ubiaja learned of the shooting and came to the hospital, he treated the matter with levity and said Damien was shot with a tear gas gun.”
Although Ogbeide was said to have been later arrested alongside the policemen involved in the shooting, PUNCH Metro gathered that they were later released on bail.

When contacted, Ogbeide said, “Ujatalor has already gone round several media houses with the same allegation. I have nothing more to say. The matter is already with the police.”
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Moses Eguaveon, confirmed the incident.

He said, “Arrests have been made and investigation is ongoing. Ogbeide and Ujatalor’s statements have been taken. As for the allegation against the Ubiaja Police Division, Damien was alleged to have gone to the hospital with an angry mob. Perhaps it was done with the intention of attacking the hospital. A distress call was sent to the police and when they arrived, they met Damien with a broken bottle. In the process, a riot gun exploded and Damien was wounded. Investigation is ongoing to determine if he was wounded by the riot gun or bottle.”

'MY UNCLE HAS BEEN SLEEPING WITH ME SINCE 2013' 12YR OLD GIRL REVEALS

Anthony Wayas (pictured left) a resident of Finima community in Bonny LGA of Rivers State has been accused by his 12 year old niece of having sex with her since 2013, Tribune reports.
Anthony, who is the brother to the girl's father took responsibility for her after her father passed away when she was just a year old. By the time she turned 12, he started having sex with her.

His evil act came to light on Monday April 21 after the girl told her neighbour what her uncle was doing to her. The neighbour then told another neighbor who told the youth leader in the community and Anthony was accosted in his home where he was badly beaten and had to be rescued by the police. Continue...

Narrating what happened to Tribune, the little girl said
"Uncle Anthony is a father to me. He is my father’s brother. My father is dead and my mother is in our village at Adamawa State, married to another man now. I don’t go to school. I finished Primary 6 and was supposed to start JSS1 but I was not sent to secondary school by my uncle. I usually stay at home to do house chores. I would then take my cousins to school and come back home to work. I would go back to the school in the afternoon to pick them. My Uncle started sleeping with me in 2013.

How it happened was that he would leave for work in the morning and come back in the afternoon while his wife is away at work where she works as a cleaner. He would take the children to the big room, asking them to stay there, and would take me to the small room. He would remove my pant and push me on the bed. He would then remove his trousers and bring out his manhood. He would then put it inside me and sleep with me. I can’t count the number of times it has happened. When I told the wife, she threatened to return me to our village.

On Saturday, April 19, my uncle asked me to mix hot and cold water for him to take his bath. He took the bucket to the bathroom and asked me to bring his sponge to him. As I took the sponge to him, he dragged me into the bathroom and had sex with me. There were people in the house but he warned me not to shout. The following morning, I told one woman in our compound. She, in turn, told someone and when the person interviewed me, he called in the Finima youths. I am surprised that my uncle is denying.” she said

Anthony denied the accusation made by the little girl saying he has suffered erectal dysfunctional for a long time due to a sexually transmitted disease he suffered sometime ago.
"I am surprised at what she said that I was having sex with her because it is not true. I have a problem with my manhood which has resulted in my inability to make love to a woman. I have not been experiencing erection at all. I was told by my doctor that it was caused by syphilis that I once had. He said the sexually transmitted disease was not well treated when I had it. It also resulted in my having zero sperm in my semen which the doctor said would not make me have a baby. I was given Proviron to boost my sperm count.” he said.

Anthony's wife, who the girl accused as an accomplice, says her husband has sexual challenges and that Karen never told her of her husband's sexual advances
"We have been married for 14 years but, initially, my husband had low sperm count. He married another woman after me but we got pregnant at the same time after several prayers. I have a child and the other woman has two.

She has left and I am the one taking care of her children with mine. Karen is my husband’s niece. She came to us after her father died and she was just about a year old then. I am confused about the whole issue because my husband had been having weak erection for over a year and had not been able to make love to me. We sought medical help and the doctor recommended some drugs. Since the drugs are expensive, we have resorted to prayers. I am not defending my husband but I don’t understand how he was able to have sexual relationship with the girl with his current condition. And Karen did not inform me as she claimed. If she did, I would have admitted it,” the wife said.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers State, Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident and says investigation is currently going on and if he is found guilty, he would be charged to court.

Policeman abducts, brutalises eight-year-old girl

Residents of Olufowobi Street, Ketu, Lagos, were thrown into confusion after an eight-year-old girl, Amarachi Abakwam, was found tied up and brutalised under the bed of a policeman attached to Police Mobile Force 22.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the policeman, Augustine Gbuchenge, with Force number 400823, lived in the same compound with Amarachi’s family.
The father of the victim, Patrick, told PUNCH Metro that on the fateful day he had been looking everywhere for his daughter until they discovered her under Gbuchenge’s bed.
Patrick said, “Last Thursday, I returned from work around 7.30pm and met my children and wife outside. There was power failure on that day so everywhere was dark. I asked after Amarachi but my wife said she was probably in our apartment sleeping.

“I was not satisfied with this explanation because my children don’t usually sleep early. When I went up, I did not see my daughter so we started asking around. Some little children in the compound then told me that Gbuchenge had called my daughter earlier to help him buy akara.
“I went to the policeman’s room to challenge him but he denied seeing my daughter so we continued looking everywhere. After sometime, the whole compound got involved in the search and all clues pointed to the policeman.”
Patrick told PUNCH Metro that he and the other neighbours challenged Gbuchenge again and an argument ensued.

He said Gbuchenge immediately stood up and threatened to go and tell his colleagues at the Ketu Police Division that he was being wrongly accused of abduction.
“Some moments later, I also stood up and headed for the police station to go and report the matter thinking I would meet the policeman there as well but I did not. After reporting the matter, a police corporal accompanied me back to my house,” Patrick said.
It was learnt that when they returned to the house, Gbuchenge was nowhere to be found and his room was locked.

“We were able to beam a torchlight through his window where we saw my daughter’s legs pointing out from under the bed,” Patrick said.
Neighbours were said to have rallied around and broken Gbuchenge’s door open.
PUNCH Metro learnt that when the little girl was finally pulled out from under the bed, she was bound by her hands and feet while a piece of cloth had been stuffed in her mouth.
Amarachi was said to have been bleeding profusely as she had sustained a broken skull.
She was subsequently taken to Gbagada General Hospital but due to the severity of her wound, she was referred to the Lagos Island General Hospital.

When our correspondent visited the victim at the hospital, she was seen wearing a neck brace while her head had been bandaged.
Narrating her ordeal, Amarachi said, “On that day, he (Gbuchenge) asked me to buy akara for him. After I returned, my mum asked me to go upstairs to do the dishes. As I was going, the man pulled me from behind and took me into his room.

“He then tied me up. He did not rape me. After sometime, my parents started shouting my name and calling me, the policeman used an iron to hit me in the head repeatedly and then pushed me under the bed and used clothes to cover me. Under the bed, I saw little children’s clothes.
“He then turned on his generator so that even if I tried to shout, no one would hear. After sometime, he left. I continued to hear my father’s voice and I struggled to push my leg from under the bed. That was how they saw me and rescued me.”

Amara described the policeman as a very friendly person who usually bought sweets and biscuits for children in the compound. She said she was surprised that he would do such a thing.
A neighbour, who did not identify himself, described Gbuchenge as a very strange person who usually carried a large bag around.

“The man (Gbuchenge) has been living in this compound for over three years. He is married with children but his family lives in Alapere, Ketu. He has two buses but on the day of the incident, he did not bring his vehicles home, it seems he had planned to escape on that day.
“We believe he wanted to use the girl for ritual. What were little children’s clothes doing under the bed?”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident in a text message sent to our correspondent. She said efforts were on to determine if the suspect was indeed a policeman.
She said, “I heard of the wicked act. MOPOL 22, which is where the complainant claims the suspect works has been contacted. However, the commander in charge of MOPOL 22 said there was no person with such a name or identity in his squadron.

“Meanwhile, we have sent signals to other police departments and stations to ascertain if the man is actually a serving policeman. The act is inhuman and the suspect will never go unpunished.”

THREE PERSONS BURNT TO DEATH OVER ALLEGED KIDNAP IN OSOGBO

THREE persons, suspected to be kidnappers, were on Friday, burnt to death in Osogbo, the Osun State capital. Investigation revealed that youths, led by commercial motorcyclists, combed the town to pick up the suspected kidnappers in different parts of Osogbo, and attacked them with sticks, woods cudgel and later set them ablaze with disused tyres.

A suspect was burnt to death at the Ayetoro area of the city by an irate mob, while the other two were burnt at Plantation and Igbona areas of the town. Another suspected kidnapper, Segun Akinwale, was on Thursday, rescued by the police from being lynched in the Alekuwodo area of the town for allegedly attempting to kidnap a child before his mother found out. His alleged confession was said to have irked the youths, mostly the okada’s riders.

It was gathered that the suspect allegedly confessed that nine of his colleagues are already at different parts of the town to kidnap children in Osogbo and its environs. Based on the alleged confession, angry youths moved round Osogbo in search of other kidnappers, during which the three suspects were burnt to death. At Ayetoro area of Osogboa, it was gathered that the suspected kidnapper was found with a baby inside a bag he carried. Drivers at the Ayetoro junction were said to have challenged the suspected kidnapper, who reportedly dressed like an insane person, and opened the bag that was found with him. It was, however not certain if the boy allegedly kidnapped and found in the bag was alive or dead.

The development allegedly prompted the youths in the area to mobilize others and set the suspected kidnapper ablaze. A similar incident occurred at the Plantation and Igbona areas of the town where youths of the area set ablaze those suspected to have kidnapped some children in the area. The police have been deployed round Osogbo to prevent further break down of law and order. Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Maishanu, has condemned the trend of burning of suspects in the state, describing it as jungle justice, which he said was against the law. He said the state would not be allowed to be turned into a theater of crisis, vowing that the police would do everything possible to forestall further breakdown of law and order. Assuring that the police would conduct thorough investigation on the incident, the Police Commissioner warned that people should desist from taking laws into their hands.

Also speaking, the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, condemned the development. He warned the residents against jungle justice, saying cases of criminal activities should be reported to law enforcement agencies, rather than the people taking the laws into their hands. Speaking through his Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, in a statement, the governor stressed that the state government would join hands with relevant security agencies to ensure proper security of lives and property of the people of the state.

NSCDC Arrests Suspected Kidnapper In Ogun

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State Command, has arrested a farmer, Olusegun Kehinde, for allegedly kidnapping a nine-month-old child in Abeokuta, the state capital.

It was learnt that Kehinde was arrested by the NSCDC men on patrol of PHCN facilities in Abeokuta after the child’s mother, Mrs. Olanike Ogundeyi, raised the alarm on sighting her baby, Malik Ogundeyi, with the suspect.

Ogundeyi told the NSCDC men that the suspect kidnapped her child after he crawled out while she was busy.

She said, “I just discovered that my baby had crawled out. Then, I saw the man outside, holding my baby close to his chest. It was when I raised the alarm that the baby was forcibly collected from him by my neighbours.

“He attempted to run away, but the people, with the support of the NSCDC men, pursued and got him arrested.”

The suspect claimed he lived at okanlawon’s Compound, Oke-Ijeun, Abeokuta South Local Government Area. He added that he was just passing through the area and had no intention of stealing the child.

The NSCDC spokesman, Kareem Olanrewaju, explained that the incident happened on Wednesday on Ore-meji Street, Ijeun-Titun, Abeokuta, at about 12pm.

He said, “The NSCDC immediately whisked the suspect away from the scene to prevent mob action, and to enable him face the consequences of his action through the due process of the law.”

He said the corps observed that the suspect was not coherent and needed a medical test to determine his mental state.

He said, “It is, however, very wrong to jump into any conclusion now as preliminary investigation into the case has began and this will form the basis for comprehensive findings.

“The case will be referred to the appropriate government agency should the suspect be found culpable.

“Parents are also urged to always ensure that their children do not go out of their sight, while we must all be on the alert because non-challant attitude will create more room for criminals to operate.”
