NSCDC Arrests Suspected Kidnapper In Ogun

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State Command, has arrested a farmer, Olusegun Kehinde, for allegedly kidnapping a nine-month-old child in Abeokuta, the state capital.

It was learnt that Kehinde was arrested by the NSCDC men on patrol of PHCN facilities in Abeokuta after the child’s mother, Mrs. Olanike Ogundeyi, raised the alarm on sighting her baby, Malik Ogundeyi, with the suspect.

Ogundeyi told the NSCDC men that the suspect kidnapped her child after he crawled out while she was busy.

She said, “I just discovered that my baby had crawled out. Then, I saw the man outside, holding my baby close to his chest. It was when I raised the alarm that the baby was forcibly collected from him by my neighbours.

“He attempted to run away, but the people, with the support of the NSCDC men, pursued and got him arrested.”

The suspect claimed he lived at okanlawon’s Compound, Oke-Ijeun, Abeokuta South Local Government Area. He added that he was just passing through the area and had no intention of stealing the child.

The NSCDC spokesman, Kareem Olanrewaju, explained that the incident happened on Wednesday on Ore-meji Street, Ijeun-Titun, Abeokuta, at about 12pm.

He said, “The NSCDC immediately whisked the suspect away from the scene to prevent mob action, and to enable him face the consequences of his action through the due process of the law.”

He said the corps observed that the suspect was not coherent and needed a medical test to determine his mental state.

He said, “It is, however, very wrong to jump into any conclusion now as preliminary investigation into the case has began and this will form the basis for comprehensive findings.

“The case will be referred to the appropriate government agency should the suspect be found culpable.

“Parents are also urged to always ensure that their children do not go out of their sight, while we must all be on the alert because non-challant attitude will create more room for criminals to operate.”
