Mary Sunday: A cry for justice, succour

The dream of every university graduate is to gain employment, thereby putting an end to life of dependency on parents, who must have laboured hard to help achieve that feat.

That dream, perhaps, is one that may never be realised, if financial help does not come Mary Sunday’s way, to assist her undergo urgent reconstructive surgery on her face and body. Sunday allegedly sustained first degree burns from a cooking stove with boiling stew poured on her by her fiancé, Police Corporal Isaac Gbanwuan Orseer, during a fracas.

Trouble started for the 27-year-old Business Administration graduate when in August 24, 2012, she and her fiancé, had gone to see their doctor over Isaac’s health issues. On their way home, an argument ensued over a telephone call that Mary received. The Corporal queried her concerning the telephone calls she made and received, suspecting the calls were from her lovers.

Obviously not satisfied with her explanation, the argument degenerated and by the time they got back to their Block 5, room 10 abode in Pedro Police Barracks, Isaac became aggressive and started beating her.

According to Mary, “when it became obvious I could not bear the pains inflicted on me by Isaac as he was kicking and dragging me, I tried to escape the scene and then ran to the second floor of the two-storey building, where we lived.”

This did not deter Isaac from inflicting more pain on his victim. According to Mary, Isaac pursued her into a neighbour’s kitchen, where she sought refuge, forcefully opened the door, and in a fit of rage, carried the neighbour’s cooking stove with boiling stew and emptied the content on Mary’s head. The stove exploded, consequently setting Mary on fire.

“I ran into our neighbour’s kitchen. She had a pot of boiling stew on her stove. Isaac just made his way to the stove, carried it and poured the content on me. Maybe it’s because he shook the hot stove, I don’t know. All I knew was that the stove exploded on me and my hair and cloth just caught fire. That was the last thing I remembered as I slipped into coma after that,” Mary recounted.

This act by Isaac has caused Mary to lose her two ears, her upper neck and arms, glued together by the fire. Mary has survived two surgeries to repair the damage caused to her face with the help of her family. Till date, Isaac is walking a free man, incidentally.

The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer (DPPRO), Damascus Ozoani has however absolved the Corporal of the allegation on the ground that the police have carried out and closed investigations on the issue. The DPPRO, had in February, affirmed that Mary intentionally inflicted those harm on herself.

Beyond the investigation carried out by the police, Mary seems not to have any other window of redress since the police have closed investigation on her case.
Mary alleges foul play in the investigation as the police did not at any point visit her to get any information from her after a complaint was lodged by her relative.
These claims by the police have however been faulted by the Human Rights community.

Executive Director Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, (WARDC), Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, believes that the police authority were too hasty in coming to the conclusion, arguing that unless it is intended to cover up one of their own from being punished for a dastardly act, the case should be reopened. She wondered why a woman, who was running for her life, seeking help and assistance from neighbours, would suddenly become suicidal and inflict such wanton harm on herself.

Since the incidence happened in Lagos that has passed the Violence Prohibition Law with a commitment to rid the state of violence against women and men, WARDC has petitioned the state House of Assembly.

In a petition to the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Akiyode-Abiola called on the state assembly to set up a panel of enquiry in respect of the case, so that such act will not go unpunished in order to serve as deterrent to others.
“We believe it is necessary because we suspect that there is an attempt to subdue the case because of the multiple conflicts of interest associated with the case. Also is the fact that several women suffer this and other forms of violence and the police attitude in Lagos often allows for these crimes to go unpunished.”

“The law amongst other things provides for protection and redress for women and men in abusive relationship. The state is under the obligation to protect this woman from this form of aggression”, she argued.
When contacted on telephone, Isaac said that the case has already been reported to the State Provost Marshal at Ikeja Command headquarters.

Meanwhile, the victim, Mary, has appealed to Nigerian Police authorities to reopen the case so that justice can be served on the matter. She also appealed to Nigerians to help her raise N5 million, needed to undergo reconstructive surgery in India.

2 Cousins Die Committing Incest In Imo

Hell was let loose at Umualianya kindred Umumpe, Umuevu Okirika-Nweke in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA of Imo State last Monday when a man, Mr Mathias Nwoko and his female Cousin, Angela Ihuoma Anyanwu, met their untimely death while making love to each other.
Sources in the community told 247ureports.com that the late Mathias, 45, had returned home from his Onitsha base to attend the priestly ordination of his kinsman, Rev. Fr. Anayochukwu Onuoha, held at Mater Dei Cathedral, Umuahia, Abia State last Saturday June 20 2013.
It was learnt that all through the ordination ceremony, Mathias and the late Angela were literally tied to each other, with the latter taking the front seat of the former’s jeep.
Their entanglement was said to have continued the next day, Sunday, during the ceremony marking the first Holy and Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Ghost Parish, Umuevu Okirika-Nweke.
The deceased were also seen together at the ordination reception and later at the compound of the new priest where they were dancing to the music coming from Mathias’ car’s loudspeakers, while he occasionally was shooting gunshots from his pump action gun as Angela fed him with cartridges.
Interestingly, the deceased cousins were among family members who received prayers from the new priest, who earlier enjoined the people of the community to shun hypocrisy, atrocities and other iniquities if they must avoid God’s anger.
The late Mathias who was said to have been married for 13 years without any child, however, returned home with a young girl as his fiancée who he left in the house.
It was gathered that while the fiancée was home watching videos and waiting for Mathias, he only returned around 11pm and told her to go to sleep while he collected torchlight to see Angela off to her house.
But that was not to be as the duo diverted to Mathias’ semi-completed building.
Worried by her daughter’s non arrival to the house, Angela’s mother called her phone line but Mathias was said to have answered the phone telling the woman that her daughter was with him.
Also, alarmed by Mathias’ absence in the house up till Monday morning, his fiancée began to look for him within the house and was shocked to have stumbled on the naked but entangled bodies locked in death.
She immediately alerted Mathias’ family members who could not believe their eyes. Also, Angela’s mother who was returning from Morning mass was simply speechless at the sight of the deceased.
The lady who was on top of the man had her blouse on but naked from the waist region while the man had his singlet on his neck. The two were dead.
Their bodies were removed and deposited at Holy Rosary Hospital, Ogbor Nguru in Aboh Mbaise LGA.
When contacted, the state police public relations officer (PPRO), Mrs Joy Elemoko, promised to call back to inform our reporter about the outcome of police investigation.

How I was ráped and defrauded by fake prophet – fashion designer

A 27- year-old man identified as Morufu Garba is currently cooling his heels in police net for defrauding and assaulting a 20 -year- old lady in Ebute-Metta area of Lagos, recently. The incident happened on the 12th of April, 2013 at about 10pm; when the victim identified as Aminat Ajala, a fashion designing apprentice at Ebute-Metta, returned from work; tired and hungry only to discover that there was no food in the house.
She opted to go get some toast bread at a shop not too far from her 91, Freeman street residence, where she and her siblings live with their maternal grand mother, after the untimely death of their biological mother. Little did she know that Morufu Garba, a notorious fraudster was lurking somewhere in the neighbourhood, looking for an opportunity to play a fast one on unsuspecting ladies, of which she soon became a victim.
Aminat Ajala told Crime Alert that she had walked few metres from her residence when she noticed that someone tapped her shoulders from behind; she turned to see a young man, walking close to her. He politely requested to have some chat with her, a request she granted.

From that moment on, she alleged she was not in control of actions that ensued; as Morufu, told her he is a prophet with a special message for her. He further told her that it was revealed to him that she will be dead the very next day if certain sacrifice was not carried out; to this he demanded that she provide the money by all means to enable him cancel the death spell hanging around her.
Afraid and under the influence of some power beyond her control, Aminat thought of ways to generate the money, as she had nothing on herself. She then revealed to Morufu that she is just an apprentice and has no money to that effect, he asked her if she knew any other means to raise the money, perhaps through her parents, or siblings, but warned her not to disclose the information to any one else.
At that suggestion, she told him her grand Ma, who owns a buka on the street, has some money stuck in a refrigerator somewhere in her shop, that she also knows where the key is kept. He escorted her back to her residence to get the key, after she succeeded with that, she led him to the shop, and opened it.
They opened the door and went straight to the refrigerator, she tried opening it, but encountered some difficulties as the padlock used in locking it could not open.  Morufu went out side, found an axe placed at a corner near the shop and used it to forcefully open the refrigerator and took over N80,000 kept there.
He then took her to meet another victim of his, a 22- year- old  hair dressing apprentice identified as Ruka, who lives on the  neighboring Glover street at Ebute-Metta, he claimed he was trying to also help perform some sacrifice to stop her mother from destroying her life. He had charged her N10,000; and she gave him N1,500, as what she had on her then.
They agreed he will get the money over the weekend. After that,  he led her to the venue where he was to perform the sacrifice, some where in Makoko area of Lagos. On getting there, he took her to a one room apartment, spread a mat on the floor and asked her to take off her clothes and lie on the mat.
She obeyed, and all she can recall was that she was ráped. When he was done with his “sacrifice”, he inserted some objects suspected to be charm into her priváte part, and abandoned her there. The next day, still under the influence of the charm,  the lady managed to gather herself and left the place, but she had no clue where she was.   She was later found wandering in Makoko area by one of her neighbours from Freeman street. “He noticed my unusual behavior and suspected that something must have gone wrong somewhere , he brought me home.
Crime Alert also gathered that members of the Ajala household were worried over the unusual disappearance of Aminat from home. It was gathered that after  they waited for her to return home with the toast bread to no avail, her grand mother, popularly called Alhaja was worse hit, as she was said to be apprehensive of the thought of what might have happened to her grand-daughter, not after their mother died at a premature age. She had organized a search party, and stayed awake till the next morning when Aminat was brought back by the neighbour.
Recovery from the ordeal
After Aminat was brought back home, the case was reported to the Oyingbo police station and she was taken to a clinic for medical check up, which confirmed that she was ráped and bleeding. Aminát gave her statement after she recovered from the ordeal. But when she took the policemen to the house where she was ráped, Morufu was no where to be found.  When inquiries were made, neighbours at the place said they don’t know any body with the identity they described.
To get Morufu’s arrest, the Oyingbo police DPO invited Ruka, whom he was expecting N10,000 from, and tactically asked her to place a call to Garba on the number he gave her, to come get the money at Makoko junction. He swiftly came, and was arrested on the spot and thereafter charged to court.  Information from the court disclosed that Morufu Garba has been charged for a similar case in the past.
