Ritual Killers Sentenced To Death By Hanging

More states seem to be embracing the death by hanging penalty regardless of the pressure from civil society groups and the international community.

Justice Chukwuemeka Ohakwe of Owerri High Court on Tuesday sentenced seven persons to death for murder of one Okechukwu Osuji on May 11, 2001.

The offence was contrary to Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 30 Volume 11 laws of the Eastern Nigeria 1963 applicable to Imo State.

The condemned persons include Ejike Okoro, Cajetan Okoro, Rapheal Ike, Paul Njoku, Eric Igbo, Chidiebere Njoku and Anyanwuchukwu Unamba. Justice Ohakwe also discharged and acquitted the third, sixth and seventh accused persons (Uchenna Udeh, Ikechukwu Ukonu and Boniface Okoro) for lack of evidence.

In his judgment, the trial judge said: “From the evidence by the prosecution, there is no evidence except the confessional statement by the first accused person (Ejike Okoro) linking the third, sixth and seventh accused persons with the murder.”

According to him, the confessional statement of the first accused person was not binding on them and they were therefore discharged and acquitted. He said the prosecution had established the offence of murder of Okechukwu Osuji on May 11, 2001 against the first, second, third, fifth, eighth, ninth and tenth accused persons, stating that they had been found guilty of offence of murder. He therefore sentenced each of the accused persons to death by hanging.

Ohakwe said the prosecution had an overwhelming evidence that members of a secret cult killed the victim in a thick forest along Toronto-Egbu Road in Owerri North Local Government Area of the state on the fateful day and collected his brain for ritual purposes.

The accused persons who were caught by the police in an uncompleted building during their evil act all hail from Owalla Uratta in Owerri North Local Government Area.

UNILAG undergraduate kidnapped and defiled by two friends

She was kidnapped and defiled in turns by two friends, one of them close to her family, but she could not tell anyone because the guys took her unclad photos and she was afraid of the stigma. The guys posted the photos on the internet and somehow her relations abroad saw them.

INFO  gathered that it was her relations outside the country that contacted her mother and expose the rape of this UNILAG undergraduate. Below is what they did to the lady as stated by her:
“Babajide came to our house to treat our dog. In the process, he requested for my phone number and I reluctantly gave him. He started calling me and told me he would like to go out with me.“But I told him I already had a boyfriend whom I loved. Yet, he kept calling me, saying he was not interested in just going out with me but wanted to marry me. Aside that, he kept monitoring my movements and at a point, I deleted his contact on my phone.

“I was returning home for a weekend in April, a car stopped by my side at Idumota bus-stop. Jide was sitting beside a driver who was unknown to me.

“On sighting him, I walked past. But the next thing he did was to hold me by the hand, dragged me into the car and drove to his house.

“When he got home, he started beating me and tore my clothes, asking what I wanted that he could not give me. He instructed me to unlock my phone and when he discovered that I used my boyfriend’s name as password, he resumed the beating.

“At a point, he gave me his phone to speak with some of his friends who told me I was in for trouble, for turning down a member of their unnamed cult, threatening that they would kill me for treating him shabbily.

“Thereafter, he defiled me and when he was done, his friend took his turn despite my plea. When he saw I was bleeding, he stopped and started begging me. At that point, he brought out his phone and started taking my unclad pictures. I made attempt to cover my face but he hit me on the head with a bottle and continued taking the shots.

How I escaped
“I begged him to allow me call my mother to give him some money for my release but he refused. I also appealed to him to delete my pictures when he started begging me.

“I stayed in that room all night till the next day when he went out to get me some drugs. Immediately he stepped out, I tried the door and discovered it was not locked from outside. I quickly changed into one of my dirty clothes in my bag and escaped.

“But I could not tell anyone at home. When my elder brother asked what the problem was on seeing the blood stained clothes, I told him I was involved in an accident and when my mother insisted on knowing what the problem was, I told her I fought with a course mate. She insisted on going to school with me on seeing the magnitude of the injury but I prevented her.

“Barely had I settled down than Babjide called, threatening to kill me if I disclosed what happened to anyone. As if that was not enough, his friends also called and threatened me as well.”

The alleged defiler, Babajide Bashorun, who claimed she was his girlfriend, has been charged to court.

Robbers Raid Hotel For Dollars

Unidentified gunmen on Monday struck at a popular hotel in Ajao Estate, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, and carted away millions of naira and dollars belonging to the management and lodgers in the hotel.

The robbers struck at May Hotel located at 22, Kaara Street, Ajao Estate at about 2.00 am with sophisticated weapons.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the operation lasted more than two hours and the victims were lodgers in the hotel who had just returned to the country as well as foreigners.

It was learnt that the robbers only stole money in the local and foreign currencies from the victims while their belongings were not touched.

What surprised the hotel management and residents was that the area was well protected with gates manned by guards round the clock.

According to an eyewitness account, the armed gang came from Inua Mohammed Street in Ajao Estate and broke the street gate locks.

They held the unarmed security guards and receptionists in the hotel at gunpoint and forced the receptionists on duty to lead them from room to room to rob the lodgers
“They did not shoot any bullet but seized the guards and the receptionists and ordered them to cooperate with them while the operation lasted,” said an eyewitness.

After the successful operation, the robbers locked the receptionists and guards in one of the rooms in the hotel and left.

The incident has caused suspicion that the robbery was the work of an insider in the hotel or the residents of the area.

When P.M.NEWS visited the hotel, the owner and the manager were not around.

A worker in the hotel told our reporter that they had gone to the State Police Command to see the commissioner over the incident.

Some of the workers who confirmed the incident said that they were still in shock over what happened and said the robbery might be the work of an insider who provided information to the attackers.

At Ajao Police Division, the DPO was not available to comment on the matter.

But a source at the station confirmed the incident and said the police have commenced investigation on the matter.

Toddler Dies In Uncovered Soakaway Pit

There was confusion at 36, Damilola Morounfolu Street, Orisumbare, Akowonjo area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, at about 5.30pm Sunday, when a year old baby fell into an uncovered sewage pit and died.

The victim, little Alimat Adetunji, was said to have been playing near her mother while Mrs. Bilikisu Adetunji, her mother, was washing clothes.
Speaking with P.M.NEWS reporters, the father of the deceased, Mr. Adetunji Obakayeja, said: “I was away when I was called and informed that our daughter was missing.

“While we were searching for her, they brought my daughter back to me dead and I was informed that she fell and died inside a sewage pit beside our compound.”

According to Bilikisu, the mother of the deceased, she was washing inside the compound with the baby by her side.

“I was inside our compound washing with my baby. I discovered that the cloth she was putting was wet and I quickly went inside to get another cloth for her. Before I came out of the room, I couldn’t find her any longer.

“I went round the street in search of my daughter only for my child to be brought to me lifeless by a neighbour identified as Bolaji Adejobi.

“Though I don’t have the power to fight back, I’m calling on the government to take the matter seriously and bring about justice,” Bilikisu added.

Commenting on the incident, Bilikisu’s neighbour, Yemisi Rawas, said that water always overflows from the sewage, which is about 4ft deep and left uncovered.

According to Bolaji Adejobi, “We live in the same street with the mother of the deceased. I took the little girl as my child. This was a child who had never left her mother. I had to join them in the search after she went missing.

“While the parents of the little girl went to the Baale’s palace to lodge their complaint about the missing child, I and other people started looking for her everywhere including an uncompleted building around the street.

“My focus shifted to the 4ft sewage pit where the hands, legs and the cloth the little girl wore were noticed and I quickly called on people around to assist me in bringing her lifeless body out of the pit.”

No occupant of the building was available for comment on the matter as some of them were said to have locked themselves inside their flats for fear of being attacked as friends of the bereaved family attempted to vandalise anything on sight.

Efforts to speak with the caretaker of the house proved abortive as he refused to come out for comments when information got to him that newsmen were around.

When contacted, policemen from Afonka Divisional Police Headquarters, Shasha, Lagos arrived the scene about 7.30pm.

Inspector Orisa Cletus, who led the team blamed the parents of the child for failing to take proper care of her.

He also described the case as a murder case, saying that the landlord of the building would be charged with murder. Meanwhile, the remains of little Alimat was taken to Afonka Police Station along with the parents and the caretaker of the house for further investigation.
