LAGOS—Relatives of the single parent and mother of three,
Olubunmi Uko, who disappeared from her Fola Agoro, Lagos, home with her
nine-year-old son last Friday, leaving a suicide note, have begun to search for
her body in Lagos rivers.
Uko, a businesswoman and distributor of Forever Living
Products, left a seven-paragraph suicide note, informing her children and
parents that she was going to jump into a lagoon and end it all, owing to her
inability to offset a bank loan.
When Vanguard visited her house yesterday, her eldest son,
Toni, refused to speak on the issue, saying he was under strict directive not
to speak with anyone. However, a relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity,
said nothing had been heard from the woman since she walked away. The relative
said: “This whole thing has devastated my family.
We have made efforts to reach her on phone, but her lines
are switched off. Even Seun, her youngest child with whom she went away, cannot
be reached on phone either. “We have contacted all our relatives, home and
abroad, but none seems to know anything about her whereabouts. “Just yesterday
evening, we contacted local boat operators around riverine areas to be on the
lookout for any bloated body and alert us.
This is just our ‘Plan B’ and we pray that she did not carry
out her planned suicide. “Our worry is also on the nine-year-old child she went
away with. We have contacted policemen at Somolu, who requested for pictures of
both the woman and her son.
We begged them to inform all police divisions in Lagos State
to be on the lookout for them.” Vanguard had reported yesterday that the woman,
in her suicide note, complained that she was tired of life, adding that by the
time the letter would be seen, she would have ended inside the belly of a
shark.
