Pregnant woman stabbed to death over N1000

A WOMAN in Edo State, Evelyn Obanonyi, is now biting her lips in regret as the clock ticks towards her arraignment in court to answer charges for stabbing her benefactor and neighbour, Juliet Ediale, who was six months pregnant, to death.

Obanonyi, a 36-year-old native of Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State, is alleged to have committed the heinous act on January 30, 2016, when the deceased, Juliet Ediale, 37, came to her house, to ask for repayment of a N1,000 loan she had taken from her.

Ediale’s untimely journey to the great beyond began when she took Obanonyi to a cooperative society in December 2015, where they were to each borrow the sum of N30,000 to support their individual trading activities.

The Commissioner of Police, Edo State, Mr Chris Ezike, who spoke with Sunday Sun, said the two women were asked to pay N1,000 each for the registration forms. Obanonyi did not have the amount required. Ediale offered to lend her N1,000 to purchase the form. Few days after, Ediale, went to the home of Obanonyi on January 30, to ask for the money and met her cooking. Somehow an altercation ensued between the two women.

Recounting what happened, Obanonyi told Sunday Sun: “I sell pure water. The deceased came to my house around 7.30pm to ask for the N1,000 loan she gave me. I could not afford N1,000 at that point in time. So I started begging her and asked her to give me two weeks. I was cutting fish in my kitchen with a knife. Then we began exchanging words and started fighting.

Then I stabbed her in the heart with the knife in my hand. She fell down and we rushed her to nearby hospital before we took her to University of Benin teaching Hospital for treatment. The following day, she died. Her husband reported the case to the police at Textile Mill Police Station and I was arrested. It was the devil that used me. I have two children and we are struggling to survive in my family.”

When he spoke with Sunday Sun, the husband of the deceased, Mr. Ikauoria Ediale disclosed that he was aware that his wife had given a loan to the suspect. He, however, said he was not at home when his wife went to the house of the suspect to ask for the money.

“It was the crowd and the noise that I heard that made me run to the scene and saw my wife in a pool of blood. We rushed her to nearby hospital before we moved her to UBTH hospital and following day, my wife died. I want justice to be done. Somebody just killed my wife like a goat,” he stated.
