THE police in Adamawa State have thwarted a plot by Boko Haram to attack Yola, the state capital, ahead of the general election.
The Commissioner of Police, Gabriel Adaji, who made the disclosure at a press conference, on Friday, in Yola, said policemen discovered 19 high-calibre bombs buried in a bush a few kilometres to the city.
Adaji said the discovery of the bombs and the location, in Song Local Government Area, followed a tip-off.
He said the bombs, which were at 90 per cent completion stage, only required connections to batteries to cause what might have been conceived to be the worst explosion in the country.
“We thank God for answering our prayers in Adamawa State. The discovery has prevented something that would have caused a hell of sorrows in the state. Some of the bombs were capable of bringing down a 10-storey building,” Adaji said.
He stated that the terrorists aimed to blow strategic structures, including the about one-kilometre long River Benue bridge linking Yola South and Yola North.
The police boss explained that the bombs, the weakest of which could destroy structures within a 200-metre radius, had been detonated by the police anti-bomb squad.
The devices, he said, were on the verge of being transported to various parts of the state capital before they were discovered.
He stated that no arrest had been made in connection with the incident.
A couple of days back, six suspected suicide bombers were arrested by soldiers in Yola.
