Ebola: Nigeria Looking At Local Remedies For Cure – NAFDAC


 
The director-general, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr Paul Orhii, has disclosed that Nigeria is looking at some local remedies to contain the Ebola virus.
The NAFDAC DG who just returned from the World Health Organisation (WHO) emergency meeting, counseled Nigerians not to panic, saying, “there is a great promise that some drugs and vaccines could be found soon to contain the Ebola virus. So Nigerians do not need to panic.”
These were contained in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja by the director of Special Duties, NAFDAC, Abubakar Jimoh.

He stated, “We have some Nigerian remedies that we are looking at very closely and after investigation, we hope that they will be able to contain the Ebola virus.”
Orhii explained that the deadly virus is not a death sentence in Nigeria as the federal government, through the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Health, has managed the situation effectively and halted the rampaging spread of the disease.

Wife Of Late Port Harcourt Doctor Discharged
The minister of health, prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, yesterday disclosed that the wife of the Port Harcourt doctor has been discharged from the isolation ward in Lagos State, Tuesday, September 9, 2014.
According to him, this brings to 10 the number of patients that have been successfully managed and discharged, which are among the total number of 12 survivors of EVD in Nigeria.
No Current Confirmed Case Of Ebola – FG
The minister who was speaking through his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Dan Nwomeh, in a statement made available to LEADERSHI, said that, at present, there is no current case of confirmed EVD in Nigeria.
He, however, stated that a suspected case of EVD from Ile-Ife, a university student who had contact with the late Port Harcourt doctor at a naming ceremony in Port Harcourt, had been quarantined and is being investigated.
He said, “As of today, the total number of confirmed cases of EVD in Nigeria stands at 19, 15 in Lagos, four in Port Harcourt.”
According to the minister, the total number of deaths from EVD in Nigeria stands at seven. Five of this died in Lagos, one in a private hospital, the index case Mr. Sawyer, and the other four in the isolation ward in Lagos State.

“Two of the seven died in Port Harcourt, the medical doctor who died in a private hospital and the contact, a patient in the hospital at the time the doctor was also on admission, who died in the isolation ward in Rivers State.”
Regarding contacts currently under surveillance, Chukwu said Lagos now has 16 contacts under surveillance. A total of 350 contacts who were previously on surveillance have been discharged having completed 21 days of observation.
“ Port Harcourt has 490 contacts under surveillance. It is a mixed group consisting of tertiary and quaternary contacts of Mr. Sawyer’s. 16 contacts have already been discharged from surveillance in Port Harcourt having completed 21 days of observation.”

FG Insists On Sept 22 Resumption Date For Schools
Despite public outcry about the safety of school children from the EVD, the federal government yesterday insisted on the September 22 resumption date for primary and secondary schools.
There had been serious protest by some Nigerians against federal government’s review of the resumption date of schools from October 13 to September 22 on grounds that the country has not been certified free of the deadly Ebola disease yet.
But minister of health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu told journalists after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the decision to shift back the date to September was based by the advice given to government by experts, and that the authorities should be allowed to do their job.
 
Reps To Meet Minister, NMA Over Resumption
The chairman, House Committee on Education, Aminu Suleman has disclosed that the House of Representatives will on Monday September 15, 2014, meet with Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), minister of education, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau and others to reach an agreement on the resumption date for schools which has generated controversy among stakeholders.
