Police Nab Woman For Abducting Neighbour’s Daughter

When Mrs. Funke Olowokere of Sobi Road, Ilorin, Kwara State, left her one-month-old daughter with her neighbour and friend, Funke Odelabi, last Sunday, little did she know that she would abduct the baby.

After Olowokere, who had been washing the baby’s clothes, discovered that Odelabi had disappeared with her baby, she was said to have raised the alarm which attracted neighbours who organised a search party for the missing girl and the suspect but all to no avail.

Parading the suspect on Saturday, the outgoing Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command, Mr. Agboola Oshodi-Glover, explained that after the residents failed to locate the suspect, the matter was reported at the police station.

He added that in the course of investigation, Odelabi was traced and arrested in Ogbomosho, while the baby was rescued and handed over to her parents.

Odelabi, who confessed to the crime, said, “I have no child of my own. This has been a burden to me as I really wish to carry my own baby. After all failed attempts to have a baby, I stole the child. The devil must have pushed me into doing this,” she said.

During the parade of the suspect by the commissioner, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Christopher Dega, who was on a working visit to the command, also handed over an Infinity Sports Utility Vehicle that was recovered by the police to its owner, Mr. Elochukwu Okeke

Oshodi-Glover said six suspects were arrested by the police in connection with the robbery. He named the suspects as Adekunle Ishola, Dele Cletus, Simon Ogundeji, Dare Suleiman, Salisu Balogun, Okesola Rufai, Kazeem Yakubu and Fatai Yakubu.

The commissioner said three cutlasses, one Toyota Corolla car, marked Abuja ABC 76 APP, and three motorcycles were recovered from them.

He said, “On December 13, 2013, around 8am, one Lawal Dare reported that a gang of robbers, numbering about six, invaded his house where household and personal items, including a Toyota Corolla car, were stolen.

“The first suspect, Adekunle Ishola, was identified by the complainant. He was arrested and his confession led to the arrest of Cletus, Ogundeji, and Suleiman by a team of anti-robbery men from the State Criminal Investigation Department.

“Their confession also led to the arrest of Fatai Yakubu of the Saki area of Oyo State, who later led detectives to the recovery of an earlier stolen Infinity Jeep and arrest of two of his gang members.”

Oshodi-Glover added that the command apprehended two suspects – Bala Tanko and Taju Ayinde – for criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of fire arms.

He said, “On Monday around 1.30pm, based on a tip-off on the hideout of a wanted notorious armed robber, popularly called Gbajama, at Okoolowo, Ilorin, a team of anti-robbery men carried out a raid of the hideout.

“The aforementioned suspects were arrested. The suspects confessed to having committed many heinous crimes in Ilorin metropolis and beyond.”
