For
10-year old Oluwaferanmi Okunola, the future looks bleak and the sun does not
shine. The life of this primary six pupil of Omolayo Nursery and Primary School
located in Idi-Aba, area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, currently lies in
the balance.
At the time of filing this report, the hitherto
brilliant and active lad lay bedridden at Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, owing to the sudden appearance of a brain
tumour, which is threatening to sound a death knell to his future, if his taxi
driver father fails to cough out N1 million.
Daily Sun gathered that the boy’s ailment has seen
him being taken from one hospital to another, including the University College
Hospital (UCH), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and Federal Medical
Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta where he is currently admitted
According to his father, Mr. Olanrewaju Okunlola, a
lot of money had been spent on series of medical investigations and medications.
“In spite of all that, the doctors said the only option left is a surgery,” a
distraught Mr. Okunola submitted with a strong tone of sorrow.
In a referral letter to Lagos University Teaching
Hospital dated November 20, 2013, signed by one Dr. Alaba of the Federal
Medical Centre, Abeokuta and made available to Daily Sun, a diagnostic CT scan
revealed that the patient had a deadly brain tumour. Part of the letter reads:
‘The above named is a 10 year old known brain tumour patient(CT scan diagnosed Sella
meningioma) who was diagnosed in this centre and promptly referred to UCH,
Ibadan about 7/52 ago for treatment’
Information in the letter also revealed that the
little boy had suffered seizures and loss of consciousness. As at the time of
making the referral, the boy was unconscious.
Dr. Alaba also stated that the kid was on one
occasion seen at UCH Ibadan, but his father defaulted in further clinic visits.
But in his explanation, the boy’s father said that
the default was not intentional, as he had been unable to cope financially with
the treatment. He confessed that apart from having spent all he earned as a
taxi driver on his son’s illness, he was currently swimming in huge debts.
He told Daily Sun that the operation plus
medication and other sundry expenses were estimated to gulp about N1million,
“an amount I have not even seen in my dreams”, he lamented.
Expressing optimism that his son would survive the
operation if the money was provided, Mr Okunola appealed to well meaning
Nigerians and members of the public to help save his dying son.
“The operation and everything will cost about
N1million and my wife and I have spent everything we have on the disease.
Please help me. Please, Nigerians should help save my son” he begged.
