MAN KILLS WIFE, HANGS SELF

LIKE a scene from the horror film, a union which is supposed to be blissful and for life was cruelly cut short last Friday,
culminating in the deaths of the two partners.
It was a gory sight to behold the lifeless bodies of the two former love birds who had exchanged vows of' 'till death do us part' 10 years ago.

This was the situation residents of Agbogbo along Ilesha/Owo expressway in Akure, the Ondo State capital had to contend with last Friday evening when the man, a 47-year old taxi driver, Jimoh Lateef, stabbed his ex wife, Amudat Oluwafunmilayo Lateef to death.

Not wanting to face the wrath of the law, Jimoh, moments after stabbed himself, but when that would not hasten his death, he took a rope and hanged himself on the ceiling of his uncompleted building.

He had called his ex-wife on phone to come and pack her belongings from his house. Not knowing that death was lurking for her, she walked into the hands of an angry husband, who stabbed her severally and later committed suicide by hanging himself.

The Lateefs had been married for about 10 years and the marriage which had gone sour many years ago had produced five children. The eldest of the children was 10 while the youngest was three.

Oluwafunmilayo, aged about 45, who was a trader at Iloro market hailed from Ijaraisin in Kwara State while Jimoh, a former a baker hailed from Osogbo in Osun State.

A family source said the duo had been having marital problems for the past two years which led to them resorting to court after several threats from Jimoh that he was going to kill his ex-wife and kill himself.

Thus, when the family of the deceased realised that Jimoh was always battering his wife, they decided that they should separate.

It was just about two weeks ago that Jimoh requested the court to divorce them which was granted. She was given two men from the court to accompany her pack her belongings.

But as she got home with her two companions to pack her things, Jimoh who had earlier requested for the divorce went on his knees to beg her that they should not separate.

When both of them became emotional, she could only pick two of her clothes and left the house. Unfortunately, last Friday afternoon, residents of Omoniyi quarters along Agbogbo area, along Owo-Benin-Akure expressway were thrown into pandemonium when one of the children of the deceased returned from school to meet his mum in a pool of her own blood and his father dangling from the ceiling of the house.

It was gathered that the child raised an alarm which attracted residents who discovered the lifeless body of the Lateefs in the house. The chairman of the landlord association of the quarters, Mr Ojo Oluwatayo who reported the case to the Divisional Police Station in Ijapo, the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), Mrs. Jane Mbanefo, a Superintendent of Police, (DPO) immediately swung into action and moved to the scene of the incident.

Mbanefo lamented that if the neighbours had called the police or intervened when they heard a distress call from the house, it would have saved the lives of the deceased. She urged the public to assist the police by reporting such cases which will assist the police in discharging their duties promptly.

When the dead bodies were taken to her station she noted that there was no case as the family of Jimoh pleaded that the bodies should be taken for burial because they are Muslims and there was no case over it because of the circumstances.

An uncle of Jimoh, Alhaji Musa Adisa popularly called Labaika told the Nigerian Compass on Sunday that the matter has been reported to the Deji of Akure, adding, “we want to bury Jimoh in his house while his ex wife will be buried else where since there is no case over the incident.
