Breakthrough: Michael Okpara varsity discovers cure for HIV/AIDS

Prof. Francis Otunta, the Vice Chancellor (VC), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, in Abia, has confirmed the discovery of a new drug for the treatment and cure of HIV/AIDS.

Otunta told newsmen at the university campus on Wednesday that the finding followed years of scientific research by the institution. He said that the breakthrough was made by Prof. Maduike Ezeibe, a researcher in the university. According to him, Ezeibe had presented the drug to the University management, Senate and Council, where he explained the processes he went through to arrive at his finding.

The VC also said that Ezeibe had equally presented the drug to his colleagues in the medical field and nobody had contradicted his finding. “Prof. Ezeibe is a researcher in Veterinary Medicine and one may wonder how he discovered a drug to cure a human ailment,” he said.

He commended Ezeibe for the breakthrough, saying: “He has brought honour to the University and we are proud of him.” Otunta said that the university was in the process of mass producing the drug for further clinical trials on persons living with HIV/AIDS in the country. Ezeibe, who is a professor of Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Virology, said that the drug was produced with Aluminum Silicate and Magnesium Silicate (Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate).

He said that the two minerals “are already in use as medicines for the treatment of various animal and human diseases”. He said that 10 persons living with the disease, “who volunteered’’, were made to apply through their doctor to the VC. “They were treated daily with the Medicinal Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate (50 mg/kg),” he said.

Ezeibe said that the volunteers were subjected to monthly tests for viral loads and CD4-lymphocyte counts. “With the antiviral effects of the medicine, its ability to reach all cells (as nanoparticles) and the lymphocytes, there is no more hiding place (sanctuary) for HIV,” he said.

He said that the medicine had been used to potentiate Ampicilin, Chloroquine, Piperazine and Sulphadimidin, among others, and could be a major foreign exchange earner for Nigeria, if approved by relevant authorities.

According to him, “local and international pharmaceutical companies would find the product as a veritable raw material”. Ezeibe said that he presented the research findings to the World Virology Conference in Atlanta in 2015, and Antonio (Texas) in 2016.

Besides, he said that the results of the laboratory tests had been published in many international scientific journals, including the British Journal of Medicine and Medical Research, among several others.

He said that he was also about to sign a memorandum of understanding with a U.S.-based Scientific Research Publishing, publishers of World Journal of AIDS, for the publication of his book “How I came about the cure for HIV/AIDS”. Ezeibe, who said that the medicine was patented in August 2014 in Nigeria, called on the Federal Government to help him to secure international patency for the drug.

He said: “If commercialised, the Medicinal Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate would become an alternative for petroleum to the Nigerian economy.”

ENGINEER HELD FOR TYING UP AIDE IN VAN BOOT

THE police have arrested an engineer for bundling a man into stop around 7Up, the police were shocked to find Daniel Dabis, with his legs and hands tied to his back, at the back of the Hilux.

During preliminary investigation, Odunaga claimed that Dabis stole his money in his Abuja home and fled to Lagos. He said he was taking Dabis, who he described as his office assistant, back to Abuja before the police stopped him. He said: “I have been searching for him all over the place.

The search took me to his village in Plateau State.
It was one of his friends that told me he was in Lagos where he was hiding. Precisely, I was hinted he was staying at Mile 12 Market, Ketu. I drove down from Abuja and I met him at Mile 12 Market, Ketu, where I picked him up.

“Initially, I had taken him down to Ketu Divisional Police Station, Lagos, to report the matter, but the officers at the station declined to detain him there.

So, I had no option than to take him back to Abuja”. Odunuga, who lives at Pent City Estate, Abuja, added: “That was what I was trying to do before I was accosted by the police team on routine patrol under the Ketu/Ojota flyover.” But Dabis said: “What I took from him were a ladder and a wheel barrow.

He is estimating the cost of the wheel barrow at N110,000 and the ladder, N90,000, that is all I took from him.

He has because of that tied my legs and hands to my back. His plans were to drive me to Abuja. If not for the officers, he would have killed me and dumped my body at the road side.”

2Face Idibia’s planned protest: We ‘ll arrest him, if… – Police

ABUJA—The Nigerian Police, yesterday, said it would not allow the anti-government protest planned by popular music star, Innocent Idibia, (2Face Idibia) to hold in Lagos, just as Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Governors Forum, Mr Ayodele Fayose; lawyer and human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa; among other Nigerians, insisted that Nigerians have a right to freedom of expression.

The popular Afro-Pop artiste, 2Face Idibia, had earlier in the week, called for the support of his fans and colleagues via his social media platforms to join his march against the crippling economic state of the nation. The protest is slated for February 6, 2017.

In a video posted on his Facebook account on Tuesday, 2Face urged Nigerians to come out in a “peaceful and articulate manner” for the march, adding that “the need for urgent solutions to the challenges facing Nigerians has become very clear.

Things are not getting better for the majority, we are still where we are, poor and desperate. I will no longer be quiet.” The group coordinating the protest, @EiENigeria, wrote in its Twitter handle: “In view of the latest police update, how do we proceed with the march? Protest continues as planned. #IStandWiithNigeria.

Our leaders owe us their ears too and they must hear us. This march is about connecting the government with the citizens.”

We ‘ll arrest him, if… —Police

But the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the command will not let the protest hold in the metropolis. Owoseni said intelligence reports indicates that criminals might hijack the process to wreak havoc in Lagos. He said: “Information reaching us revealed that some hoodlums are planning to hijack the peaceful protest and at such, we won’t allow it to hold in Lagos.

We know that Tuface does not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand,” Owoseni said. According to him, “no matter how good an intention is, hoodlums would always find a way to harass, rob and attack innocent members of the public who may wish to go about their lawful duties.

Owoseni had earlier said, the protest planners have not officially notified the police of their plan, stressing that the police encourage civil society groups to inform the force anytime they want to stage a protest because of their safety and that of others, as hoodlums seize such medium to perpetrate evil. The Police, however, threatened to arrest the singer if he dares hold the protest.

Fayose, Adegboruwa react

Reacting to Owoseni’s position, Governor Fayose reminded the commissioner that “the duty of the police to secure Nigerians is mandatory, not optional. Therefore, if there is any intelligence report suggesting the possibility of criminals hijacking the process, it is the duty of the police to provide security cover for the protesters.”

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose noted that the All Progressives Congress, APC-led Federal Government must be made to understand that leadership is about accountability and to be accountable, leaders must listen to public opinion either by civil or peaceful protest.” Fayose continuing, said: “Court of Appeal affirmed in its judgment in Inspector General of Police Vs All Nigerians Peoples Party that protest or gathering do not require police permit or interference as obtainable in an advanced democracy.

“Most importantly, the protest is said to be for and about good governance. So who is afraid of the protest? Who does the police represent or is representing in this issue?” Justifying the protest, the governor said: “Nigerians are hungry and angry, our currency is now above N500 to $1. If Nigerians want to show their anger, no one should prevent them. Nepotism, extra judicial killings, disobedience to court order and human rights abuses must stop.

“The conscience is an open wound and the guilty is afraid. If the APC-led Federal Government is now acting as if the protest is against it, it means the federal government has accepted to be guilty as charged. Like I said before, I support the protest. Also, lawyer and human rights activist, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa called the bluff of the Police Commissioner, asking him to get a copy of the Nigerian constitution to guide his actions instead of threatening to cut short the wishes of the masses.

This is also as Niger Delta ex militants have pledged support to the protest, saying it is the best way to go. The ex militants vowed to heed the 2Face call for peaceful protest if it would call the attention of the government to the plight of Nigerians. Adegboruwa said: “I have read reports credited to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police declaring that the rally slated for Lagos on Monday February 6, 2017, will not hold. I consider this to be an attempt to intimidate those who wish to partake in the rally, otherwise it cannot be a message for us veterans and indeed the deprived, oppressed and hungry people of Nigeria.

“For the information of the Police Commissioner, Nigeria is a democratic country governed strictly in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution. Section 39 of the Constitution grants freedom of expression, including the right to be heard and to disseminate information and ideas. Section 40 grants the right to associate and gather together. Section 38 grants the right to freedom of movement and peaceful assembly.

I believe that Mr Fatai Owoseni has a copy of the Constitution, to guide his actions and utterances on this matter, instead of threatening 2Baba and law abiding citizens, who are responsible for his salary.” He reminded Owoseni that the issue of police permit for citizens to gather freely expired with the coming into force of the 1999 Constitution and that hinging on it to deny people right to gather was like going back to the military era of shutting up citizens from legitimate expressions.

“I therefore, urge the good people of Nigeria, especially those who reside in Lagos, to join us en mass at Ikeja, for the rally on February 6, 2017. We cannot be intimidated in our own country, by the same people who are paid to protect us. “This is not a rally by miscreants or thugs as to warrant the fears being expressed by the police commissioner.

The statutory duty of the police is to offer us protection on Monday and help to maintain orderliness, throughout the period of the rally. So come rain or shine, we shall hold the rally on Monday, as scheduled, because it is illegal for the police to seek to ban a lawful assembly,” Adegboruwa added.

Ex-militants back protest

Meanwhile, a statement by the National P.R.O., Phase 2 ex-militants and chairman, Urhobo Ex-militant Leaders Forum, Mr H.M. Ebirie, stated that “we the Niger Delta ex-agitators are fully in support of the 2face Idibia-led nationwide mass protest against economic hardship and severe hunger in the country.

The federal government seemed to have no immediate measures to cushion plights of the suffering masses and we are ready for the protest. “The Federal Government must be awaken to rise up to its responsibilities of creating the conducive environment for economic growth and alleviation of severe hunger in the land through people-oriented policies and programmes,” they said.”

Similarly, Youths for Human Rights Protection and Transparency Initiative, YARPTI, has said that it will take part in the February 6, protest that is being organised by popular musician, 2Tuface’ Idibia. In a statement by its Vice President, Dr Joy Tobin, the group said some members of the organisation will march with Nigerians in Lagos while others will be in Port Harcourt.

It said, “The right to join with fellow citizens in protest or peaceful assembly is critical to a functioning democracy,” warning the Nigerian Police not to interfere with a peaceful protest, adding that even the Police in U.S wouldn’t dare stop peaceful protesters. “Within the space of a little more than a year, Nigeria’s story has turned full circle from an economy lauded as the largest on the continent with potentials to grow further to one enmeshed in its worst economic crisis in 25 years.

Now, the economy has officially died and the government is cash-strapped with 27 states owing workers and pensioners backlog of wages. “This is in addition to about two million workers and pensioners starving because their wages and benefits are not being paid on time while prices of goods in the market have gone to high heavens. All these are due to bad government policies. “We can’t keep quite anymore.”

Stockbroker in N4.8bn share scam, remanded in Ikoyi prison

The Managing Director of Partnership Inves-tment Company Plc has been arraigned before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

He was remanded in Ikoyi Prison following his arrest and arraignment. His arrest, arraignment and remand in Ikoyi Prison were sequel to a petition by the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), which accused him of fraudulent misappropriation of the sum of N 1,237,245,000 and US$80,000.00. and for sundry offences including stealing and dishonest conversion of proceeds of share sale.

Some of the defrauded investors yesterday revealed that over 300 investors of Partnership Investment Company Plc (PIC) were swindled of over N4.8 billion.

Dishonest conversion of proceeds

Some of the victims whose shares were in the deal include former Managing Director of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, ETI, Mr. Arnold Ekpe with over N1.237 billion worth of shares; Mr. Godwin Anono, Chairman Standard Shareholders Association of Nigeria N160 million; Mr. Alabi Olushola Ibrahim, N12.540 million; Mr. Solesi Samuel, N40 million worth of shares.

Also among the victims is a widow with over N4 million worth of shares and other investors scattered across the country. Narrating his ordeal, Olushola stated: “Mr. Ogiemwonyi, the Managing Director of Partnership Investment Company Plc called me to say that since I have some shares that are not being traded over the years that it would be good for me if his company could manage those shares and generate 10 per cent returns and that this would be paid to me twice a year.

When in 2014 the returns were not forth coming, Ogiemwonyi started giving one excuse or the other; that the returns are being reinvested, it was then I realised that he was playing fowl, hence I demanded for my shares which could not be returned to me. “ Mr. Arnold Ekpe, through his lawyer, McPherson Barristers & Solicitors has written to the NSE for intervention and no remedy has been provided.

Also, some of the other investors including myself have taken the case to court and Mr. Ogiemwonyi has been remanded in prison custody at Ikoyi, Lagos.” Meanwhile, responding to the letter sent to the NSE over an allegation of the fraudulent conversion of the N1.237 billion shares belonging to Arnold O Ekpe, the Head, Corporate Communications, Mr. Olumide Orojimi said the Stock Exchange has already taken action on the matter.

According to a statement from the NSE: “On October 17,2016, The Exchange suspended Partnership Securities Limited (PSL) from trading on all floors of the Exchange, effective October 18, 2016. PSL remains under suspension from trading on the floor of the Exchange.

“On October 17, 2016, The Exchange requested the Central Securities Clearing System Plc. (CSCS) to request the settlement bank to place N42,499,761.20, being the proceeds from the sale of ETI shares for Mr. Ekpe made by PSL on October 14, but due to settle on October 18, 2016 into a special CSCS bank account in order to prevent the proceeds from settling into the account of PSL.

Subsequently, the sum of N43,301,792.70 being the proceeds of sale less statutory charges was paid to Mr. Ekpe’s Union Bank Plc. account on November 3, 2016 as a direct result of the steps undertaken by The Exchange immediately upon its receipt of Mr. Ekpe’s complaint.

“The Exchange on October 19, 2016 formally informed the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the complaint and requested for a joint examination of PSL and its associated companies.

This formal notification was a follow up on an earlier oral notification to relevant personnel of the Commission shortly after receipt of the complaint on October 17, 2016. “The Exchange thereafter held a meeting with Mr. Ekpe, his solicitors McPherson Barristers & Solicitors (McPherson) and PSL on Monday, October 24,2016 to address the issue and take necessary steps towards recovery of the sums misappropriated and sanctioning of PSL upon conclusion of the matter.”

Olumide also explained: The Exchange being a Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO) regulates its members with a view to ensuring fair treatment and protection of all investors equally within the market.

By your appointment as Provisional Liquidator of Partnership, other creditors within the capital market to whom Partnership may be indebted, may be concerned that their interests could be in jeopardy and their interests may not be given due consideration.

To this end, we believe that we can obtain assurances from you that the interests of all creditors would be given adequate consideration by your organization in view of the fact that the Companies and Allied Market Act, 1990 (CAMA) enjoins a Provisional Liquidator to be an officer of the court and act in the interest of all creditors concerned.”

Meanwhile, when contacted the Acting Managing Director, Partnership Investment Company Plc , Mr. Andrew Elueni via text message, he said “ The case is in court. Anything said may be prejudiced. Meanwhile, there is nothing like share scam as Partnership had the customer’s mandate to sell.”

AFROBEAT SINGER, DEDE, STORMS OUT OF RADIO INTERVIEW AFTER CLASH WITH FEMI ADESINA

Nigerian Afrobeat singer, Dede Mabiaku, on Monday stormed out of a live radio interview after presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, asked him to “keep quiet.”

A female presenter on Lagos Talks 93.1 FM had teed up questions about Buhari administration policies as well an upcoming nationwide protest championed by entertainer, Innocent ‘TuFace’ Idiabia.

About 40 minutes into the interview, which took place in Lagos Talks’ studio in Ikoyi, Mr. Adesina said Nigerians who are gearing up for the protest, slated for February 5 across the country, are those still disgruntled by the outcome of the 2015 elections.

The protesters are still “living and romantisising in the immediate past”, Mr. Adesina said.
Mr. Mabiaku then interject: “Haba! Femi, Iro nla!.” Translated literally from Yoruba: “Hah! Femi, that’s a big lie!.”

Mr. Adesina then asked him to “keep quiet and let me talk.”
Mr. Mabiaku initially yielded to Mr. Adesina’s slapdown for a few minutes while the presidential spokesman sued for more patience from Nigerians.

President Buhari has a mandate that should last “48 months”, but he had not even spent half of it, Mr. Adesina said.

The interviewer then turned to Mr. Mabiaku and asked him to respond to Mr. Adesina’s excuse.
“Why do you want to hear me when he had the audacity to tell me to shut up?” a visibly-irritated Mr. Mabiaku.

He then stood up and unplugged the studio headset and reached for the door knob. All efforts to calm him down by the host failed.

When Premium Times called to ask why he would interject a citizen in that manner in public, Mr. Adesina said he did not make the statement.

“Please go and see the video very well and get back to me,” he said.
But he actually made the statement and the video evidence is below.

Mr. Idibia himself has been enduring regular attacks from supporters of the Buhari administration who questioned his moral authority to lead such a major protest, including allegations that he is getting financial backing from opposition party politicians.

But he denied the allegations and said he remained undaunted by them, promising his supporters that the march will go on as planned.
